SAP announced at Sapphire 2026 that its new sustainability AI agents are going live by end of year, with early results showing scenario simulation time cut from a full day to about 20 minutes and packaging compliance review hours reduced by more than 50%. The efficiency gains are real — and they matter for teams struggling in manual workflows.
But here is the line buried in SAP's own announcement that deserves more attention: ESG data is often derived from industry averages that can vary by 30 to 40% or more from actual values. Automating a faster path to an inaccurate number is not the same as solving the underlying problem. Faster automation only helps if the underlying data is reliable.
The harder challenge — how buyers and suppliers exchange cleaner, more defensible data at scale — is where most of the work still lives.
