A well-deserved throwback to last week’s ASEAN Methane Week. Bringing together governments, industry leaders, international organizations, researchers, and investors, ASEAN Methane Week fostered collaboration, facilitated knowledge exchange, and advanced dialogue on practical pathways towards a net-zero energy future. Kudos to ASEAN Centre of Energy for organizing these fruitful discussions!
Representing MOYA Analytics, Aniq sat on the panel "Methane Management and Net-Zero Pathways," where methane is discussed to be another GHG just like CO₂. While the differences between the two are acknowledged, in fact, methane's impact is shorter-lived; thus, the potential benefits from reductions are also experienced faster. To minimize temperature overshoots, methane reduction also gives the world the vital time it needs.
As an example, Singapore's methane emissions account for less than 1% of its domestic emissions, but they do form a huge part of global emissions. Similarly, CO₂ does not see boundaries. Singapore is pushing above its weight to help reduce emissions in other countries too, and the same mechanisms that are used for CO₂ reduction projects (like green financing) can be used for methane.⚡
On Day 2’s high-level dialogue and workshop on the energy-climate nexus, participants simulated a scenario where money was not a problem and they were asked to prioritize three main climate actions.
Turns out, even when money is not an issue, there are other problems when it comes to implementing policies and technologies. Interestingly, once money comes into the picture, the chosen policies change in all groups.
One thing that was constant, though, was that renewable energy should always be used as the backbone. RE was such a core policy in all groups because that is the fuel. Energy must always come from somewhere, and the sources of the future are solar and wind. Other technologies (electricity grids, hydrogen, batteries, and electrification) are all ways to move and transform energy in space, time and type. But RE is a core part of any sustainable national strategy.
